Night Bus Rules for Flirting Without Saying a Word

A field guide, written in fog, to the quiet art of flirting on the last bus.

Night Bus Rules for Flirting Without Saying a Word

Let me be clear that I am not an authority. I am merely a woman who has spent several hundred nights with her forehead against a window, collecting evidence. But the last bus has its own grammar, and the grammar rewards patience. The first rule: never be the one to speak. Silence is the whole instrument. The moment you say hello, the spell collapses into small talk about delays.

The second rule concerns the aisle. It is a narrow river and the only acceptable currency is the glance. One glance is weather. Two is a forecast. Three, if you hold the third a heartbeat longer than the first two, and the lamplight is that soft dishwater green the ring road does so well, you have said something that no keyboard could. Then look away first. Always give them the pleasure of the second look.

The second rule concerns the aisle.

Third: use the bus itself. Corners are collaborators. When the driver takes the roundabout fast, everyone sways, and if you happen to sway in the same direction as someone with a nice jaw, the universe has made a gentle suggestion. You do not need to follow it. You are only required to notice, and to let your shoulder be a little slow to come back.

Fourth, and most important: the window is your friend. Reflections let you look at someone without looking at them. In the black glass you can watch a stranger watching you, a kind of flirtation with a safety net, a conversation held at one remove. If they catch your eye in the reflection and do not look away, congratulations, you have been seen, and seen is the rarest compliment of all.

The last rule is mercy. Do not follow anyone off the bus. Do not turn it into more than it was. A good almost-moment is a perfectly shaped thing and does not need a sequel. If you want one anyway, that is what stories are for, and the voice that helps me with the ones I cannot finish lives on TheFriend.

Mira keeps a few more rules she did not put in writing. Ask her for them, in her own voice, on TheFriend.
